Guarding Reality
From Lens to Ledger in the Age of Synthetic Media
We are approaching a moment when the moving image can no longer serve as evidence of truth. The old principle that seeing is believing has been quietly dismantled by the rise of photorealistic synthetic video, generative diffusion models, and deep learning systems that can invent entire worlds of pixels indistinguishable from reality. The result is not only an epistemic crisis but a civic one. As Hannah Arendt once warned, “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction no longer exists.” The dissolution of factual reality was, in her view, the precondition for political manipulation.
Today the same dynamic is playing out in the digital sphere. When citizens no longer believe what they see, or worse, when they believe only what confirms their emotions, the entire fabric of democratic discourse begins to fray. The threat is not merely that we will be deceived by fakes. It is that we will cease to believe in anything at all. Once disbelief becomes our default stance toward images, reality itself loses its power to unite us.
To restore a shared basis of trust, we need a verifiable chain of custody for visual media, an unbroken sequence of proofs from the moment of capture to the moment of public display. This idea has moved beyond theory. The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, an alliance formed by Adobe, Microsoft, the BBC, and others, has already defined a framework called Content Credentials, which it describes as “a cryptographically bound structure that records an asset’s provenance by capturing assertions about its creation, modification, and editing history.” Similarly, the Content Authenticity Initiative explains that such metadata can be made “tamper evident, persistent across editing iterations, and accessible to anyone.” The principle is simple: every important video should carry a verifiable birth certificate.
Yet a signed manifest alone is not enough. What we need is a resilient infrastructure that cannot be silently rewritten. This is where blockchain enters the picture, not as a speculative financial instrument but as a distributed, immutable ledger of visual truth. A video recorded on a camera could have its cryptographic hash and metadata registered immediately on a ledger. Each subsequent step in the production chain, ingestion, editing, color grading, compositing, distribution, could append a new verifiable record that links back to the previous one. The ledger would not store the footage itself, but it would timestamp and secure each state of the asset, creating an indelible sequence of transformations.
This is more than a technical proposal. It is a philosophical stance on how truth should be preserved in an age of infinite simulation. To know where an image came from, when it was created, and by whom, is to reintroduce accountability into the machinery of vision. The camera, once a witness, has become an unreliable narrator. A blockchain enhanced provenance system could serve as its conscience.
In practice, the chain would begin at the moment of capture. A trusted device, a camera, smartphone, or drone, generates a cryptographic fingerprint of the raw file, signs it with a secure hardware key, and optionally commits the hash to a ledger maintained by a consortium of manufacturers, publishers, and civic institutions. The Leica M11 P, introduced in 2023, became the first consumer camera to do precisely this by embedding Content Credentials directly into its image files. The next link in the chain occurs when the footage is ingested into a production system or editing suite. The software verifies the incoming hash, extends the provenance manifest with the name of the editor, the timestamp, and the software version, then generates a new hash and stores the transformation as another ledger entry. Each time the asset is modified, the ledger grows, a living journal of the video’s evolution.
This does not mean every file must live on the blockchain. The ledger only needs to store the small hashes, not the media. What it provides is a public, immutable timeline of attestations. Anyone, from a news outlet to a fact checker to an ordinary citizen, could verify that a particular clip existed in a certain form at a certain time. A ledger based provenance system would not determine whether the event itself was true, even staged footage could be recorded honestly, but it would make deception visible by exposing breaks or absences in the chain.
The key challenge is continuity. Most video production pipelines involve countless transformations such as transcoding, color correction, re encoding, and compression. Each of these can strip or corrupt embedded metadata. That is why editing software, storage systems, and distribution platforms must all agree to preserve and extend the provenance manifest. The ledger must mirror this process faithfully. A distributed ledger built on existing frameworks like Hyperledger Fabric or a consortium blockchain could achieve this without the environmental costs or volatility of public cryptocurrencies.
One particularly instructive precedent comes from Archangel, a joint research project by the UK National Archives, the University of Surrey, and the Open Data Institute. It demonstrated how national archives could use a blockchain to verify the integrity of digital video records over decades. Each archive generated hashes of their materials, stored them on a permissioned blockchain, and created a public, tamper evident record of the nation’s collective memory. In essence, Archangel applied the logic of accountability not to finance but to history.
The same idea can extend to newsrooms, filmmakers, and content creators. Imagine if every major camera, smartphone, and editing suite implemented secure provenance signing by default. A video published on social media would carry a visible origin verified badge, linked to its ledger record. A viewer could click on the badge to see its full lineage: camera model, location, editor, and date. If the chain is broken, the badge would show a warning. Instead of the current arms race between fakes and detectors, we would have a shift of emphasis from detecting what is false to proving what is real.
This distinction is crucial. As C2PA’s documentation itself states, “Provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true or accurate.” It can only tell you whether the content is authentic, that is, whether it comes from who and where it claims to. But in a world of algorithmic deception, authenticity is already half the battle. A deepfake pretending to be a broadcast from Kyiv could be dismissed instantly if it lacked a verifiable chain from a trusted camera and editor. The absence of provenance becomes its own kind of signal.
The implications reach far beyond technology. To embed truth in the infrastructure of image making is to redefine the social contract of media. It requires cooperation between manufacturers, software vendors, publishers, and educators. It calls for a new civic literacy in which every citizen learns to read provenance data as naturally as they once read headlines. It also forces us to confront the philosophical tension between privacy and transparency. Not every journalist or citizen wants their camera ID and location embedded in a public ledger. Therefore, provenance must be flexible, revealing enough to establish trust, but not so invasive as to endanger its creators.
If this system becomes widespread, its effect could be as transformative as the introduction of photography itself. When photography first appeared in the nineteenth century, it promised to capture the world without mediation, to show reality as it is. Today, the challenge is reversed. We must invent a new kind of photography that proves its own honesty. The lens is no longer enough; it needs a ledger.
This may sound abstract, but the pieces already exist. Cryptographic hashing is trivial to implement. Ledger infrastructure is mature and inexpensive. The standards are in place. What is missing is will. It would take only a handful of major players, the camera manufacturers, the smartphone giants, the dominant editing software vendors, to make this the norm. Once provenance is embedded by default, fakes would suddenly have a disadvantage. They would appear naked, without history, without parentage.
In a conversation about this topic, a colleague remarked that he feels like a modern day Cassandra, warning of collapse while others scroll on. Cassandra, of course, was cursed to be right but never believed. The difference now is that belief can be built into the system itself. Blockchain, if used wisely, can make the truth not only visible but verifiable.
The integrity of our collective memory depends on this shift. We can either live in an age of infinite spectacle where everything might be fake, or we can design our technologies to carry within them the evidence of their own authenticity. It is not a question of nostalgia for analog truth, but of responsibility in the digital one. We can choose to wait until the next crisis, when disbelief has already hollowed out the public sphere, or we can act now, while the cameras still record and the ledgers are still empty.
If the last century belonged to the lens, the next may belong to the ledger. And perhaps, in that union, we will find a new kind of faith in what we see.
